Peter Corish AM has been involved in farming and agricultural industry representation for 35 years. With his family he owns and operates a diverse agribusiness with properties in northern NSW and southern Queensland. He is Executive Chairman of the public company PrimeAg Australia Ltd which is one of the largest owners and operators of farming land in Australia. His many industry achievements are highlighted by four years as chair of Cotton Australia Ltd and a full term as President of the National Farmers Federation. He is currently Chair of the Australia Japan Foundation and a Councillor of the COAG Reform Council. In 2009 he was awarded Membership of the Order Of Australia for services to agriculture.
Ms Catherine M Harris AO PSM (NSW) August 2004 - January 2011
Catherine Harris has been a member of the board of the Australia-Japan Foundation since 2004 and held the Chair in 2006-07. She is the Executive Director of Harris Farm Markets Pty Ltd - one of Australia's most successful privately owned fresh food retailers. Ms Harris serves on the Board of the Museum of Contemporary Art and the Foundation Board of the National Gallery of Australia, she is a Trustee of the Sydney Cricket Ground Trust and on the advisory board of the Australian School of Business. Ms Harris' previous roles include the Deputy Chancellor of UNSW, the Board of the Australian Defence Force Academy, Chairperson of St Margaret's Public Hospital, and Federal Director of the Affirmative Action Agency. Ms Harris was recognised for her work in both the public and private sectors by being awarded the Public Service Medal, the Centenary Medal and she was appointed an Officer of the Order of Australia in 2006. In April 2008 Catherine was presented with an Honorary Doctorate in business from UNSW.
Mr John Bowdler (NSW) 31 December 2006 - 31 December 2009
John Bowdler has been a member of the AJF Board since February 2007. John is a consultant to government and industry agencies on freight logistics and transport safety. He chaired the Industry Steering Group which prepared the Australian Logistics Industry Strategy in 2002, and has since been active in related reviews and implementation. John was a Visiting Fellow in the Crawford School of Economics and Government at the Australian National University between 2003 and 2008. John had extensive experience at senior levels in the Australian Public Service between 1968 and 2000, where he held Deputy Secretary positions in three Departments - Employment, Social Security, and Transport and Regional Services. His substantial background in international and inter-governmental relationships included working with Japan on bilateral issues, and in international bodies - particularly the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation forum and the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development. John holds degrees in Economics, is a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Company Directors, and a member of the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport.
Professor Mike Gore, AM (ACT) 31 December 2006 - 31 December 2009
Mike Gore is an internationally renowned science communicator and is a member of The Centre for the Public Awareness of Science at The Australian National University (ANU) in Canberra. Before this he taught for 25 years in the Physics Department at ANU before establishing Questacon - The Australian National Science and Technology Centre. At the time Questacon was founded (1980) it was the first interactive science centre in the southern hemisphere. Mike was the foundation director. He also founded The Shell Questacon Science Circus - a unique program - the largest travelling science centre in the world which provides training for young science graduates in science communication. These graduates qualify for the Graduate Diploma in Science Communication from the ANU, a program which he co-founded and which was the first in the world in which a university and a science centre combined in partnership. In 2006 he received the Medal of the Australian Academy of Science. In recent years Gore has been working with staff at the National Science Museum in Ueno and Miraikan - the National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation in Tokyo. At the former he has been collaborating with staff in the establishment of science communication programs.
Mr Huw McKay (NSW) 31 December 2006 - 31 December 2009
Huw McKay is Senior International Economist and a director in the Westpac Institutional Bank. He is the Bankfs spokesperson on pan-Asian economic and market issues. He is also affiliated with the Global Dynamic Systems Centre at the ANU. He was seconded to the Australian Treasury from November 2008 to April 2009 as Principal Adviser Financial Markets.
